The Making of La Bamba
Bringing the story of Ritchie Valens to the screen was more than simply recreating the life of a rock and roll pioneer. Director Luis Valdez set out to honour the legacy of one of America’s first Latino music stars while capturing the energy, optimism and tragedy that defined his remarkable career.
Filming took place across California, including locations closely connected to Valens’ life, helping to give the production an authentic sense of place. Casting Lou Diamond Phillips in the lead role proved to be one of the film’s defining decisions. Los Lobos recorded fresh performances of Ritchie Valens’ songs, carefully recreating the sound and spirit of the original recordings while giving the soundtrack a contemporary energy. The production also placed great emphasis on authenticity, from period costumes and classic automobiles to the recreation of 1950s television appearances and concert performances.
