Lou Diamond PhillipsasHenry Standing Bear

In fictional Absaroka County, Wyoming, Sheriff Walt Longmire investigates violent crimes while navigating grief, political rivalries and the neighbouring Cheyenne reservation.

The series

Longmire follows Walt Longmire, the steadfast sheriff of fictional Absaroka County, Wyoming, as he returns to work after the death of his wife. With the support of his deputies, his daughter Cady and his oldest friend Henry Standing Bear, Walt confronts crimes that expose the tensions, loyalties and buried histories running through the county.

Based on Craig Johnson’s Walt Longmire mystery novels, the series combines a contemporary crime drama with the landscape and moral conflicts of a Western. Its first three seasons aired on A&E before the series moved to Netflix for its final three seasons, allowing its continuing stories and character relationships to deepen across a six-season run.

Lou’s performance

Lou as Henry Standing Bear

Henry Standing Bear is Walt Longmire's closest friend, the owner of the Red Pony bar and one of the series' central links between Absaroka County and the Cheyenne reservation. Intelligent, principled and quietly formidable, Henry is often the person Walt trusts when an investigation crosses cultural or jurisdictional boundaries—but he is never simply Walt's guide or intermediary.

Across the series, Henry develops a story of his own. His loyalty to Walt is tested by secrets surrounding the death of Walt's wife, his conflict with tribal police and powerful figures on the reservation, and his determination to protect people he believes the law has failed. That conviction eventually leads him to assume the identity of Hector, a clandestine avenger who acts when conventional justice offers no answer.

Phillips gives Henry an understated authority built on precision, restraint and dry humour. Even at his most guarded, the character's sense of honour and affection remain visible. As the stakes rise, Phillips reveals the cost of Henry's divided loyalties: to Walt, to his community, to the law and to his own understanding of justice. Henry became one of Phillips' most sustained and widely recognised television roles.

Behind the camera

Lou’s Direction

In the final season, Phillips made his Longmire directing debut with “Fever” (Season 6, Episode 2). The episode follows Henry's rescue and recovery while Walt investigates the murder of a goat farmer whose land attracts treasure hunters. Directing a series in which he had played a central role for six seasons gave Phillips an established understanding of its characters, landscape and measured storytelling style.
